Genesis 17 - So here we see the official name change from Abram (Exalted father) to Abraham (Father of many) and Sarai (princess) to Sarah (mother of nations).
Commentary on Genesis 17 indicates, "Abram is therefore called "the friend of God,’’ not only because he was the man of his counsel, but because he was the man of his covenant; both these secrets were with him."
Genesis 18 - Here we see Abraham negotiating with God. This is described, not as haggling, but as an act of compassion for his relatives.
Genesis 19 - Clearly, here we find the "genesis" of sodomy. It is noted that God delivered Lot and his children to safety out of mercy, not because they were righteous. And, as to the incest, the future holds that the children born of the daughters became bitter enemies of Abraham's descendants. Nothing good can come from evil.
Overall, this exemplifies to me that obedience and prompt obedience is expected and praised and rewarded by God, whereas even the slightest hesitation can result in God's condemnation and ruin. Whew! What a week - 51 more to go. The list for next week is also published today.
I believe that Abraham's conversation with God would be intercession. As performed by a priest. Abraham was kind of the first one of those. I believe intercession can come from anyone. We do that when we pray for others. I still feel like this section God is playing favorites. I think we are missing the story of how everyone on earth knew God and understand they needed to have faith in him and follow his word.
